Kansas City, MO – April 1, 2026
Just 12 hours after Governor Mike Kehoe’s statement criticizing the proposed $120 million expansion of the University of Kansas Health System Arrowhead Training Complex, there was a dramatic shift in plans.
Clark Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, made a surprise announcement, revealing that the team would delay the expansion project. The new focus would be on a new stadium investment in Wyandotte County.
Governor Kehoe had voiced concerns about the city’s need to prioritize other investments. He also pointed out that upgrading the stadium was not part of the city’s development priorities.
"We’ve heard the concerns from the Governor and the community," Hunt said. "While the training complex expansion is important, we now must focus on the stadium project."
The decision came amidst growing uncertainty about the Chiefs’ future location. The ongoing sale of the team and the potential stadium move have added to the complexity of the situation.
The training complex expansion would have added 80,000 square feet of office space, benefiting both the football operations and business departments. Additionally, it would have increased parking spaces to meet growing demand.
"This change reflects our commitment to the future of the team and our fans," Hunt continued. "The stadium project is a priority, and we’re adjusting our plans accordingly."
The delay in the expansion raised questions about the future of the team’s facilities. Fans had hoped the complex expansion would help improve operations and bring long-term benefits to the city.
With the focus now shifting to a new stadium, questions remain about the timeline and specifics of the stadium proposal. Fans are also eager to see what this means for the Chiefs' long-term future.
"We remain committed to Kansas City and will continue working to create the best environment for our team and our supporters," Hunt emphasized.
Some fans expressed disappointment over the delay, but others are hopeful the new stadium investment will bring greater benefits. The Chiefs’ leadership believes this shift in focus is necessary for the franchise’s growth.
For now, the Arrowhead Training Complex expansion is on hold, and the focus is entirely on securing the future of the franchise with a new stadium.
